Bernhard Ganter and Reinhard Pöschel – History of AAA
TU Dresden
We look back at the history of the AAA conference series ("Arbeitstagung Allgemeine Algebra"), which was founded by Rudolf Wille in 1971 in West Germany, and that of the analog East German series "Fachtagung Algebra und Grenzgebiete", which was established by Hans-Jürgen Hoehnke in 1970. We also include the "Konferenz junger Algebraiker", set up by Klaus Denecke in 1986. These three series were merged after the German unification.
We describe the role of General Algebra at that time, highlight some notable participants, and share some personal memories.
